Is VB the devil??

Well David Berlind says it is in his new article in ZdNet.

Oh you evil Visual Basic, how I love and hate thee

It is a kind of good-bad article. He accepts he started using VB because it was so easy, but then says it does not run on his Blackberry that is built on Java or with StarOffice. Nor will a Java app that runs on StarOffice run on MS Office. So can I say Java is the devil (I will love to say that, though I am too open minded to really say that).

This is no argument at all, as certain decision you make before you develop an application based on your needs and you live with it. If deep integration with MS Office is a basic requirement for my application, I would be an idiot if I recommend doing the app in Java or vice-versa too.

Anyway I do like this quote from this article though:

The decision isn't very difficult to make. Despite the clear advantages of Java as well as the growing support for it, I'm not ready to start from scratch again--especially since Java remains somewhat unapproachable. I may feel differently in a couple of years when Sun's Project Rave has delivered on its promise of making Java as accessible to mortals as Microsoft has made Windows and Office development through VB. But Rave-- now officially known as Java Studio Creator--is taking baby steps. While Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's executive vice president for software, promised that Rave would make it much easier to script StarOffice, Sun officials have admitted that StarOffice in no way targets users who have gone down the path of customizing Office to the degree that I have.

You can hate VB and Microsoft but I just laugh when I see arcticles as such. Let me see Sun does not have any business model. Who in the world will introduce something that actully will hurt company in the long run. Now, Sun gave birth to Java that runs on any platform pretty much meanwhile they are trying to sell their Solaris. Mmm wow, great business plan, no wonder they make baby steps!

I will go get some Java now, Maxim
