MVP Asia Summit

I have been spending the last few days in Singapore attending the MVP Asia summit. It has been wonderful meeting all the Indian and Asian MVPs agian after quite some time now. Looks like Longhorn Beta 1 is just around the corner. But I still am skeptical about the selling point for this. With Avalon and Indigo avbl in XP and 2003, who would go out and buy a copy of LH. Yes, the 3D interface Desktop Manager etc, will be available only on LH, but is that enough for people to want to upgrade? As of now I am skeptical...

Learning Indigo

Well as I have been spending time looking into the new Indigo CTP, the most confusing thing is that most of the online information available(outside the winfx help), really refer to older versions of Indigo there have been a lot of basic level changes in attributes and the way things work.

So if you want learn, you have only two choices. The help and the sample code. The longhorn developer center does have a few newer articles on indigo now, but most of these deal with hello world type of services.

Getting Indigo to Go

I installed the Indigo CTP on a VPC image. Well took almost a day to get the samples to run..:-)

If you are thinking of playing around with the CTP, read the Readme file and also visit the Indigo Forums. Without these, it is going to be next to impossible to get the samples to run.

Now that the Getting Started Sample is running, I am gonna try and get a completely new service up and running. I am not there yet, hopefully, by end of week..:-)

And dont forget to read the updated Release notes.

Will Longhorn be impacted by Mac?

An interesting point of view...

Full Post - Longhorn not threatened by Mac 'halo' effect

Extract -

Longhorn not threatened by Mac 'halo' effect by ZDNet's David Berlind -- Jo Best from Silicon.com, a sister CNET Networks property to ZDNet, reports that Microsoft still intends to ship Longhorn in 2006 and that the Redmond-based company doesn't think that the next version of its desktop operating system is going to suffer from any halo effect being introduced into the market by Apple's iPod. The halo effect to which Best refers has to do with the recently reported boost in sales and marketshare that Apple's desktop systems are apparently enjoying as they ride the coattails of iPod's success. The timing of renewed interest in Apple's systems, along with the fact that a new version of the OS X operating system (code-named Tiger) is on the way, may at first appear to ...
