I was just researching some domain names, checking whois records. An very interesting thing that I found out was that, the domain gmail.com was created on 13-aug-1995 while the domain google.com seems to have been created only on 15-Sep-1997!!!

Jonathan Stroud: Ptolemy's Gate (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 3)
Jonathan Stroud: The Golem's Eye (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 2)
Jonathan Stroud: The Amulet of Samarkand (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 1)

Very interesting - is what I came up with. I was interested to find out who the previous owners were (I doubt - it was Google) but they all ask for a fee which I was not that interested to pay :-)
Try:
1. http://www.whois.sc - showsthe number of previous whois records it has
2. http://openaccess.dialog.com/ip/ - shows all the owners and history of a domain.

It was because a british company had registered the domain and google bought it from them in 2003.
