An interesting article on the last press conference about the collaboration between
Google and Sun.
GOOGLE PR MACHINE MARCHES ON
When it comes to the press, Google has it made in the shade.
While our last two presidents, George and Bill, had to scrap
for a single bit of good press (Fox News and Al Franken notably
excepted), Google just rakes in the raves. And with every tiny
step it takes, the mindless press declares that Eric Schmidt
has Bill Gates in the ropes and is pummeling wildly.
This week Google announced a deal to distribute Sun's Java
Virtual Machine and to help distribute OpenOffice, the open
source productivity suite. Somehow this is a revolution, and
Windows and Office are suddenly toast.
Get real, people. Sun will give a Java contract to anyone with
a ballpoint pen, and OpenOffice, is, well, open source. Where
is the breakthrough in making it available, or even building on
top of it? Google didn't write it -- all it's doing is glomming
on to something built long ago.
The deal was big on fuzz and small on details, but Sun did
agree to offer the Google toolbar as part of the Java runtime.
For this you call a press conference?
Well said,Yes its just Noise. But how about for MS and their
impact on this...?
Google is also coming with successfull product nowadays..so bit to be worried i guess..
As per someone...
* IBM Vs MS [ Last 2 decade ]
* now...SUN+GOOGLE Vs MS [ 2004 -2020] :)
And also Google is going to release OS in the coming year and also NASA supports for their OS. Is this true..?

The funny thing is you never know. Most of what comes out of Google you never even see coming. It just pops out and you (well I do anyways) start using it. Maybe you will get wind of a rumor some time before the release, but often those rumors are untrue. I feel the same thing will happen with a Sun/Google alliance. Anything that is big will just pop up when everyone least expects it. Also having Google throw some weight behind Open Office and Open Solaris is nothing small. Much of the success of Linux comes from companies like Dell and IBM throwing huge wads of money into the community. If we see the same thing happen with Open Solaris and OO (with companies besides Sun adding developers and money) then it will give Linux some strong competition. Keep in mind that Open Solaris has many great strengths that Linux does not have.
I think there would have been no announcement had Sun not been in the position it is now. Sun needs the publicity to keep the stock above water. Google on the other hand is in no such position. Interesting stuff and I hope this ends up being more than just noise.
